Apostle Islands National Lakeshore — Spend a day exploring sea caves along the banks of the islands. Glide atop Lake Superior in a kayak, where the water is so pristine that you can see the pebbled details on the floor of the lake through 10 meters of water. JFK’s World’s Heaviest Ball of Twine — At an estimated weight of 21,280 pounds, the World’s Heaviest Ball of Twine was constructed by James Frank Kotera, nicknamed “JFK.” Over the past 37 years, JFK has spent tens of thousands of hours wrapping twine into a ball in an isolated house in Lake Nebagamon, Wisconsin, about a 30-minute drive from Mont Du Lac RV Resort. Richard I. Bong Veterans Historical Center – This museum honors WWII flying ace Richard Bong and all Veterans. It begins with a movie of the bombing of Pearl Harbor.  Richard shot down 44 enemy planes. His story, his medals, and a replica of his plane are in the museum.  (click here to see the website)

Fairlawn Mansion and Museum — Built as the family home of mining and lumber baron Martin Pattison, the four story, 42 room mansion was completed in 1890 at the cost of $150,000; estimated at today’s costs to be well over $3 million. The exterior and first floor of the mansion have been completely restored to the original splendor, with gilded murals on the ceilings, a grand entrance hall and open staircase, marble and tile fireplaces, and original leaded and stained-glass windows. The second floor of the mansion includes access to master bedroom suite, furnished much as it was during the Pattisons’ time in the house. The third floor is dedicated to the Children’s Home era from 1920 to 1964, when the mansion served as a home to the less fortunate. (click here to see the website)

Wisconsin Point Lighthouse – Stop by to take a few pictures of this beautiful lighthouse or stroll along the beach. There is lots of driftwood that washes up on shore and you can search for sea glass.  (click here to read more about the lighthouse)

Lake Superior Maritime Visitor Center – This tiny, free museum holds a lot of history. From details and artifacts from disasters over 100 years ago to artifacts from the Edmund Fitzgerald, it’s a great place to see pieces of the past and learn about Duluth’s shipping history. They also have models of the different ships and maps of the lakes. Some of the maps show the how deep the lakes are.  The museum is on the canal, so if there happens to be a freighter going into or out of the harbor, it’s the perfect spot to watch.  (click here to see the website)

Great Lakes Aquarium – Previously known as Lake Superior Center, Great Lakes Aquarium has been located on the Duluth Waterfront since 2000. The Aquarium features animals and habitats found within the Great Lakes Basin as well as animals from other freshwater ecosystems such as the Amazon River. It also features global galleries designed to interpret marine (saltwater) animals and habitat. The Aquarium is home to North America’s largest sturgeon touchpool and several marine touchpools. Unsalted Seas, home to North America’s largest sturgeon touch tank, opened in a new gallery on the harbor in 2016. Jay Cooke State Park – Park at the historic River Inn and set out on the iconic Swinging Bridge which sways above the St. Louis River. This route is accessible to all. Visit Oldenburg Point for Civilian Conservation Corps structures and glorious views over the St. Louis River valley. Visit the Thomson Pioneer Cemetery which dates back to the late 1800s.
